SOUNDTRACK OF THE ZOMBIE WAR
November 23, 2011  Survey

Also posted on Facebook

What music best describes to you the majestic horror of the fall of the world to the hordes? We’re not talking the hope of the few who survive, but the point at which evil reaches it zenith – what is Cthulu/a necromancer/the evil government scientists hearing in their head(s) when they realize their triumph? Feel free to submit a track or two in the comments.

  1. Fear the Reaper immediately comes to mind. I’ll think on this a while and post a couple other songs later.

  4. Don’t Fear the Reaper has already been used to great effect in the 1994 tv-mini done about ‘The Stand’, plus quoted in King’s manuscript at the beginning of the superflu outbreak. That said, it would still be a cool song. I think some Concrete Blonde would work for a zombie soundtrack personally.

    Comment by Retrobuck on November 24, 2011 @ 9:25 am

  5. I like to imagine they’ll all be dancing to 99 Luftballons as they celebrate their success, then hit the last verse and realise what they’ve done. Then many suicides.

    Comment by TheCoon on November 24, 2011 @ 4:35 pm

  6. Some songs that would do well would be “Invincible” by Adelitas Way (“I’m rising up, I’ve had enough” sounds zombie/evil usurper);

    “Can’t be Touched” by Roy Jones, Jr. (imagine extremely cocky zombies, and you’ll get the idea);

    “The Man Comes Around” by Johnny Cash (used in 2004’s Dawn of the Dead — it’s just a ballad of how screwed everybody is);

    “Play God” by the Death Stars (“Gonna trash the skyline… I wanna play God for you…” and others just say “yep, the super villains won”);

    “Everything Ends” by Slipknot. This might be the most negative song ever;

    That’s all I can think of, personally. But after hearing all of those as the zombie hoard advances, you’ll probably use your first bullet on yourself instead of your last.

  7. Laughing so hard at that EmpoftheEarth! I might add the all powerful Whammy, but the best I can do is this compilation clip. m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DVIJYfvN9954&v=VIJYfvN9954&gl=US

  8. Might I suggest “Living Dead Girl” by Rob Zombie? That has always evoked a sense of the horror and scale of the Zombie Apocalypse to me. And you can dance to it!

    Comment by T.J. McFadden on November 25, 2011 @ 5:23 am

  9. Concrete Blonde is a great choice. They have some really creepy songs–and I don’t think it is all on purpose. How about Tomorrow Wendy? Great song, terrific guitar and haunting vocals.

    Comment by AJ Brown on November 25, 2011 @ 7:53 am

  10. There’s a verse in Mumford and Sons’s song “Thistle and Weeds” that alwasy makes me think of zombies:

    I begged you to hear me,
    There’s more than flesh and bones
    The dead buried their dead
    and they will come out in droves
    But take the spade from my hands
    and feel in the holes that you’ve made.

    Comment by AJ Brown on November 25, 2011 @ 11:12 am

  11. Fire on the Mountain by Rob Thomas. Great song.

    Comment by BarrettS on November 25, 2011 @ 11:39 am

  12. “Apocalypse Plese” by Muse.
    “Shrinking Universe” by Muse.
    “In the House, In a Heartbeat” by John Murphy.
    I know they have been used before, but they are awesome songs for a soundtrack of the zombie war.

    Comment by Jami on November 25, 2011 @ 1:52 pm

  13. I think from a pissed of survivor’s stand point let the bodies hit the floor and Down with the sickness are two that come to mind

    Comment by Clement S. on November 27, 2011 @ 1:17 am

  22. In my mind the soundtrack of the end would have to include at least some of the following songs:

    “Make Them Suffer” by Cannibal Corpse

    “Death In Fire” by Amon Amarth

    “Destroyer of the Universe” by Amon Amarth

    “Where Is Your God?” by Amon Amarth

    “Renounce Thy Flesh” by Towers Of Flesh

    “Homicidal Retribution” by Dying Fetus

    and last but not least:

    “Are You Dead Yet?” by Children of Bodom

    Comment by Eric Fortenberry on November 27, 2011 @ 8:26 pm

  23. I can’t believe that nobody has said Wagner yet. Almost everything he wrote would fit in nicely to the apocalypse.

    On the more modern side, I’ve always thought “The Man on the Silver Mountain” was a particularly good slaying song.

    If you want to go really esoteric, the band “HP Lovecraft” put out a couple of songs based on their namesake’s stories, among them “At the Mountains of Madness”. Although I don’t know if that would be what I’d call “appropriate”, even at the end of the world.

  24. Army of zombies by laars fredrickson and the bastards.

    Comment by Mohawksix on November 28, 2011 @ 1:07 pm

  25. Far too much metal in this list for my liking.

    Comment by Pete Bevan on November 28, 2011 @ 1:07 pm

  26. @Pete:

    Yeah, I think that’s because apocalyptic themes are mostly tied in with various metal genres more than other music. That or zombie freaks are a bunch of crazy metal heads/punks. LOL

    Comment by Patrick Turner on November 28, 2011 @ 3:01 pm

  27. For Patrick and Pete, if metal isn’t your thing for a more classical spin I can invision crazed survivors blowing zombies heads off to the tune of beethoven’s “ode to joy”. Another that comes to mind though some might call it a bit cliche, is O’ fortuna from carmina burana By Carl Orff I could see this playing as an evil ruler comes to power over the zombie hordes.

    Comment by Spencer on November 28, 2011 @ 7:20 pm

  28. Second vote for Cash’s “When the man comes around” it’s already almost a theme song for the Zpocalypse.

    Comment by T.J. McFadden on November 29, 2011 @ 10:22 am

  29. Patrick,

    The latter 🙂

    Comment by Pete Bevan on November 29, 2011 @ 1:33 pm

    Hmm.. makes me wonder about clean cut “squares” like myself.

    I vote for the background mall music in the Original Dawn of the Dead.

    Dink-di-di-dink-dink.. lol

    Comment by Patrick Turner on November 29, 2011 @ 6:58 pm

  31. Ring-around-the-rosie, sung in haunting children’s voices is what comes to mind for me. (Too morbid?)

    Ahh the joy of muzak 🙂

    Thats the sound of the end, twinkilng reworking of 80’s pop songs in empty malls and elevators.

  34. Wagner. Definitely Wagner.
    Although I don’t think an apocalypse of any kind could take place without Nick Cave.

  36. Johnny Cash “When the man comes around” a given and so is The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult. But I would also include the following.

    Enter Sandman – Metallica
    Bad Moon Rising – CCR

  37. I have no idea why but I think the song

    Gravity by Miyavi

    would fit well for the end of the world…

  38. I could see free bird being played by the last band of rednecks on earth making there last stand against the zombie hordes.

  39. Anatomy-the devil wears prada
    Blow me away- breaking benjamin
    Bodies-drowning pool
    Broken english-rise against
    The darkest nights-as i lay dying
    The enemy-godsmack
    Escape-The devil wears prada
    Get out alive-three days grace
    Hammerhead-the offspring
    I am the wind, you are the feather-vanna
    Indestructible-disturbed
    Mad world-michael andrews& gary jules
    My name is darkness-haste the day
    Nightmare-avenged sevenfold
    Numbered days-killswitch engage
    Outnumberd-the devil wears prada

    The top ones would be the Zombie album tby the devil wears prada, Escape, Anatomy, Outnumbered, Revive, and Survivor, and Killswitch’s This Is Absolution, which, despite not really mentioning the zombie apocalypse, is a great pump up and motivating song.

  48. Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen (which was in Shaun of the Dead) is easily the most ironic. Under Pressure is a good battle song. We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions is the best victory song.

  54. I think the logical choice in my opinion would be: Collapse (Post-Amerika)

    Just would fit for an awesome fight scene or something. Lot’s of explosions zombies being blown apart…..and I am getting carried away, but yea I think it would fit
